GenXers Rule!

My trip to Berlin

Hello! I’m a GenXer stuck in the 80s lifestyle. Navigating the journey towards financial independence. Despite a late start in the retirement savings & investing game, I’ve embraced the challenge with determination and living with intention.

My purpose of this blog is to share insights on personal finance, the joys of home cooking, and the art of living frugally – because financial independence is not just a destination; it’s a mindset and a way of life.

Random facts about me:

  • I’m obviously the cat lady. I’ve grown up with cats all my life. So I have the 2 of them below. Thing One and Thing Two. One day I hope to own an Irish Wolfhound, but that will only be if I find acres of land & house to own.
  • My dream destination is to go to Egypt to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum. I think my fascination for Egypt came from my twirly mustache college professor who used to share his knowledge of Egyptology and museum artifacts. I got the chance to visit the Egypt display at the British Museum. Now to move onto the next best museum.
  • I eat a high plant based diet but I am not a vegetarian.

How my Financial Life Improved

In 2019, I was making above the median wage but I was living beyond my means and struggling to pay the bills. I had almost $100,000 debt, while on a single income for a family of three plus animals with no financial savings or means to fall back on. With a lack of good financial habits (hello, poverty mindset and parental guilt), my financial life became really scary and stressful. I actually had been “trying” to get out of debt for years before, but I had a very bad habit of repeatedly taking out a personal loan to consolidate debt; thinking I was going to make it right this time and pay it off now that the consolidated payment fit my budget. Yet again, I would accrue debt and the process would start over.

Thankfully, I learned about FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Later) and that knowledge saved me. I laid out the figures and truth about my finances, asked for help from the FIRE community about the best first steps and then put that info into action that started with a budget. The foundation is easy to understand, but putting the steps into place was tough for me! Because living within my means was no easy feat! I put a lot of heart and soul into the journey and really trust that these good habits were going to work out.

Fortunately, my financial life has really improved because of it.

Well we know what happened next in the world, the pandemic. I am very humbled that I was able to keep my job and learned how to work remotely. My new hobbies became DIY home projects and paying off my debt. Three years later, I paid 2/3rds of my debt and the rest of my Student Loan debt was canceled. (Check out my Debt Free Journey).

I am in no means perfect on my journey (hello, wonky executive function issues), but I am a lot farther than I could have imagined. Now if we could have a bull market so I can hit CoastFI and stop working so much, please.

London

London

Sleeping is my Super Power

Meet London, she adores her restful moments. As an older kitty, her joints are giving her a bit of trouble, but she finds solace curling up on the couch beside her favorite humans or maintaining just over an arm’s distance to bask in their affection. When her cherished humans are gardening, she emerges as the supervising foreman, soaking up the sunlight. London enjoys lounging on laps while swinging in the hammock and has a penchant for savoring cream cheese and fruit.

Minnie

Minnie

Loves to be a Spazz

Minnie is a feisty feline but full of lots of love! She was rescued from the local shelter and seemed to be innately feral. With lots TLC, she’s become a calmer and loving version of herself who loves to be a brat to her sister. She loves to let lizards loose in the house when mom is not monitoring the cat door enough. She will eat like a goldfish, loves to play outside, melt into her favorite human and has a fascination with looking at the world upside down.
